Big Bay Balloon Parade

CUB SCOUT PACK 928 joined the volunteers who helped with the Port of San Diego's "Big Bay Balloon Parade" on Monday, December 29, 2008. The parade, also known as the "Holiday Bowl Parade", features 22 giant balloon, from Clifford the Big Red Dog to Mr. Potato Head. Several marching bands and military and rescue vehicles also make up the procession. Pack 928 helped in carrying banners in the parade, along with several other Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts in the area.

Our scouts braved a chilly start, meeting at 7:30 am at Qualcomm Stadium to take the trolley ride to downtown. The sun was out, and the day quickly warmed as we waited for the parade to get underway.

We were represented by Andrew, Garrett, Jake, Luke, and Spencer. Luke's sister Pixie joined to make and even number so we could carry 3 banners. Everyone did great and we enjoyed seeing all the people lined up to watch the parade. Thank you to all who took the time to take part in this fun event!

Toy Drive for Children's Ward at Kaiser Hospital

On Thursday, December 18th, Webelos Den Leader, Alan Stevens, and Den 8 parent, Kim Woodruff, accompanied five Cub Scouts from Pack 928 to the Children's Ward at Kaiser Hospital on Zion Avenue, to deliver the toys our pack had collected in our 2008 toy drive.
The generous donations of the scouts and the families of Pack 928 brightened the spirits of the 17 young patients spending the Christmas season there. The boys and girls in the ward ranged in age from 2 months old to 22 years, and the boys had something appropriate for everyone. One seven year old little girl who chose a Polly Pocket set for her gift, called out to the other kids in the ward, " The Cub Scouts are here, the Cub Scouts are here!", as the boys left her room.
Our Cub Scouts were respectful and compassionate to all the children in the ward and expressed genuine concern for the children who appeared to be the most ill. It was a valuable experience for all involved.
The Cub Scouts who took the toys to the hospital were, Sam, Matthew, and Caleb, from the Webelos den, Kacey, who represented the Bear den, and Kean, from the Wolf den. Our Boy Scout representative and Webelos Den Chief, Albert Blatler, assisted the boys and their parents with the gift giving. Albert and his mother, Chris, who also accompanied the boys on their rounds, volunteer their time at the hospital.

December - Holiday Lights

DECEMBER - theme for the month is "Holiday Lights". Time for the holiday season! Many will be celebrating in their own special way - whether it be Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, or your own traditions. Lights have a special meaning to the holidays. We might celebrate with lights on the Christmas tree, lighting the candles in the Hanukkah menorah, or candles on the Kinara for Kwanzaa.
This is also a time to celebrate the spirit in Cub Scouting. Let you Cub Scout spirit shine bright during the holiday season and all year long!

November - Giving Thanks

NOVEMBER - Taking time to give thanks. November 11th is Veterans Day. Make sure you give a veteran a hug and a big "Thank you".
Of course, Thanksgiving Day is a special time to reflect and give thanks for all that we have. This month is also about spreading seeds of kindness. As Cub Scouts, we are always looking for ways to help out others. The little things you do today can make a huge difference in someone's life later on.

Pack Meeting Was a Smashing Success

OCTOBER PACK MEETING was a "smashing" success!
Pack 928 had a great time with a costume contest and pumpkin auction. Congratulations to all the scouts who won ribbons for their homemade costumes. Everyone did great with their creative creations!
The pumpkin auction was a huge success! We had many lively pumpkins for auctioning. A big THANK YOU to all the parents who bid on them. The ugliest pumpkin met its fate with a baseball bat. What fun it was watching one lucky scout having a go at smashing it. That was one tough pumpkin!
Thanks to all who helped out with the meeting. It takes many parents working together to make a successful Pack, and we sure have one here!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

October - Books, Costumes, Popcorn and Pumpkins!

OCTOBER - Fall is upon us (although you wouldn't believe it by the weather!). This month's theme is "Adventures in Books". Time to take a trip down to the local library and check out a few books. If your scout does not yet have his own library card, now is the time to get him one!
"Perhaps no place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library. The only entrance requirement is interest." ~ Lady Bird Johnson

Our October Pack meeting will be full of fun. We are having a costume contest, so be sure to wear your costume! We will also be holding our "Pumpkin Auction". Bring your decorated or carved pumpkin and we will auction it off to the highest bidder. This is a fun, great fundraiser for our Pack, and ALL of the money stays right here. If you bring the ugliest pumpkin, you might even get to see it smashed to smithereens! See you there on October 27th at 7 pm.

Popcorn sales continue through the end of October. Keep up the selling! This is our BIG fundraiser for the year. Volunteers do all the work, but supplies, awards and events need to be paid for. And remember, your scouts can earn prizes or gift cards for selling.

Boats, Bats, Fishing and Frogs!

Our Pack went family camping at Dos Picos Campground over the weekend of August 15 - 17th. The weather was great, and we had lots of shade from the marvilous California Oaks all around us. One of the main attractions was finding frogs at the pond. Several boys had a great time playing and fishing at the pond. We were treated to several adventures with the local ranger, including a bug hunt, fun in the sprinklers, and a bat hike.
We also had a heated race with the annual Raingutter Regatta. Three of our Dens competed along with a siblings race afterwards. The new rain gutters worked great, and all the contestants did a great job! There were some really cool boat designs and paint jobs.
Thanks to all who made it out!

Den 2 Gets Behind Scenes Tour of Model Railroad Museum

Friday, August 15th - Den 2 was treated to hot dogs and a behind the scenes tour of several model railroad layouts at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. Mike and Linda of the San Diego 3-Railers Club cooked up some hot dogs and treats for the scouts and their siblings, then Mike gave them the grand tour of the museum. They were able to go behind several of the layous to see what goes on behind the scenes. In additional to just watching the action, they also were able to run the "JAKE" train on the SD3R layout.
Thanks to all the model train clubs that let us come by and check out the action!

Cub Scout Day Camp Rocks!

Several of our Scouts attended Cub Scout Day Camp at Camp Balboa last week. If you were there, you know that is was a jam-packed week of all sorts of activities. Archery, BB Guns, Sling Shots, Swimming, Crafts, Nature, Scout Skills, Sports...too much good stuff. You also know who Col. Bullseye is and that "Field Sports Rocks!". Scouts completed many achievements while there, and should have gone home with a large white envelope with the lists of achievements and certificates. Make sure your Den Leader gets those so you will be able to get your awards.

August - "S'more Summer Fun!"

Summer is not over yet! Still time for “S’More Summer Fun”! That’s right - the theme for August is “S’More Summer Fun”. Webelos activities are Forester & Naturalist.

Cub Scout Day Camp is August 4 – 8 at Camp Balboa.

We’ll be having plenty of summer fun with our family camping trip at Dos Picos. We’ll also be holding the Raingutter Regatta boat racing derby at camp. Get those boats ready for some fun racing!
Here are some tips on preparing your boat.

While you are grilling out at the campsite, the park, or your backyard, think about these little facts:

Americans eat seven billion hot dogs between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Strawberries, a favorite summer fruit, are related to the rose – each one has about 200 seeds.
Watermelons originally came from the Kalahari Desert region in Africa, even though a watermelon is 92% water.
The word barbecue comes from the Arawak word barbakoa, meaning "frame of sticks."
Thank the Chinese when you enjoy ice cream during the summer – it was invented there around 2000 BC
Summer squash is just a name for some varieties of squash that are harvested while still immature and tender and edible. Some are actually available year round.
What we call the first day of summer was actually right in the middle of it in the ancient calendar, where summer was the season that surrounded the longest day.

Drew was the undefeated champion in a heated paper bag bug racing competition. Alan and Scott totally amazed everyone with demonstrations of the famous "marshmallow launchers".
If you haven't been to a Roundtable meeting, now you have a little idea of the fun you're missing! All parents are welcome to attend. Want to know more? Just ask your Den Leader.

July - H2Ohhh!

July's theme is "H2Ohhh!". Yes, all about water! We got a head start last month by earning the Fishing belt loop at Lake Murray. This month would be a good time to learn about water conservation.
Webelos can work on Aquanaut & Geologist.

Where is the ocean the deepest?...On the bottom.

Scouts can earn a Water Conservation patch from the Education Department of the San Diego County Water Authority. The description and form is on their site at http://www.sdcwa.org/education/Pdf/Youth%20Orgs.pdf.

What gets wetter the more it dries?...A towel.

Here is a great interactive site that shows the Water Cycle. This is hosted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

What does not get any wetter no matter how much it rains?...A lake.

Here are some interesting water facts (courtesy of the Golden Empire Council):
􀂐 Water, either liquid or frozen, covers about 75% of the
earth’s surface.
􀂐 About 30% of the earth’s fresh water is in groundwater
and 70% is in ice (including ice caps, glaciers,
permanent snow, ground ice, and permafrost)
􀂐 They don’t call it watermelon for nothing – its 97%
water!
􀂐 The human body is 70% water!
􀂐 A birch tree can release about 70 gallons of water into
the atmosphere each day.
􀂐 Water flowing at 10 miles an hour can move rocks 10
feet thick.
􀂐 In Northern Chile, years go by without a drop of rain.
􀂐 In parts of India, they get more than 400 inches a year
of rain.
􀂐 If all the land on the earth and under the sea were
leveled out, water would cover the entire earth two
miles deep!
􀂐 Water has polar properties – a positive and a negative,
while oil has no polar properties, which is why “Water
& Oil don’t mix.”
􀂐 One third of the earth’s annual precipitation runs off
into the ocean.
􀂐 It takes at least 600 gallons of water to make a
hamburger – water for the cow to drink, water to grow
what he eats, water to process the meat. Add to that the
following things you eat with your burger:
􀀹 Bag of hamburger buns – 150 gallons
􀀹 Head of lettuce – 6 gallons
􀀹 Tomatoes – 3 gallons
􀀹 French Fries – 6 gallons
Here are some more products and the amazing amounts of
water it takes to produce a serving:
Almonds: 12 gallons
Orange: 14 gallons
Milk: 65 gallons
Rice : 35 gallons
Watermelon: 100 gallons
1 Egg: 120 gallons
Loaf of bread: 150 gallons
1 Car: 39,000 gallons

Where do ships go when they are ill?...To the docks.

What fish would an actor like to be?...Starfish.
