Boats, Bats, Fishing and Frogs!

Our Pack went family camping at Dos Picos Campground over the weekend of August 15 - 17th. The weather was great, and we had lots of shade from the marvilous California Oaks all around us. One of the main attractions was finding frogs at the pond. Several boys had a great time playing and fishing at the pond. We were treated to several adventures with the local ranger, including a bug hunt, fun in the sprinklers, and a bat hike.
We also had a heated race with the annual Raingutter Regatta. Three of our Dens competed along with a siblings race afterwards. The new rain gutters worked great, and all the contestants did a great job! There were some really cool boat designs and paint jobs.
Thanks to all who made it out!

Den 2 Gets Behind Scenes Tour of Model Railroad Museum

Friday, August 15th - Den 2 was treated to hot dogs and a behind the scenes tour of several model railroad layouts at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. Mike and Linda of the San Diego 3-Railers Club cooked up some hot dogs and treats for the scouts and their siblings, then Mike gave them the grand tour of the museum. They were able to go behind several of the layous to see what goes on behind the scenes. In additional to just watching the action, they also were able to run the "JAKE" train on the SD3R layout.
Thanks to all the model train clubs that let us come by and check out the action!

Cub Scout Day Camp Rocks!

Several of our Scouts attended Cub Scout Day Camp at Camp Balboa last week. If you were there, you know that is was a jam-packed week of all sorts of activities. Archery, BB Guns, Sling Shots, Swimming, Crafts, Nature, Scout Skills, Sports...too much good stuff. You also know who Col. Bullseye is and that "Field Sports Rocks!". Scouts completed many achievements while there, and should have gone home with a large white envelope with the lists of achievements and certificates. Make sure your Den Leader gets those so you will be able to get your awards.

While you are grilling out at the campsite, the park, or your backyard, think about these little facts:

Americans eat seven billion hot dogs between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Strawberries, a favorite summer fruit, are related to the rose – each one has about 200 seeds.
Watermelons originally came from the Kalahari Desert region in Africa, even though a watermelon is 92% water.
The word barbecue comes from the Arawak word barbakoa, meaning "frame of sticks."
Thank the Chinese when you enjoy ice cream during the summer – it was invented there around 2000 BC
Summer squash is just a name for some varieties of squash that are harvested while still immature and tender and edible. Some are actually available year round.
What we call the first day of summer was actually right in the middle of it in the ancient calendar, where summer was the season that surrounded the longest day.
